I took a glance at the contest and saw that it can be any holiday related film perhaps. You'll have to read further but this is a quote I took from their site: "Holiday movies” is a broad genre, and everyone has their favorite subcategories. Maybe you prefer the Rankin and Bass stop-motion animated classics, or maybe you prefer Hallmark’s nonstop rom-com train. They don’t even have to be Christmas movies—any holiday movie will count." Whether you apply or not, if you're looking for some "Christmas" films that are non-traditional, here are a few ideas:
"Joyeux Noel" (2005): I screened this last Christmas at The Strand in Hudson Falls and it's a film based on the fateful Christmas Eve on the warfront during WWI where all sides held a ceasefire on Christmas and both sides celebrated together. Not a perfect film but it's effective and during these troubling times it proves that we can live amongst each other in peace.
"Die hard" (1988): The debate is over! "Die Hard" can considered a Christmas film (although you can watch any time of the year).
"Eyes Wide Shut" (1999): Stanley Kubrick's final masterpiece takes place during the Christmas season. Although it's more of a psychological thriller, one could argue the importance of being a united family front, being honest with yourself & others, communicating with your family, overcoming one's own insecurities are all timeless messages that linger even during the hectic holiday season!
"Fanny & Alexander" (1982): My wife and I enjoy yearly tradition where we sit together and enjoy the 5 1/2 hour version of Ingmar Bergman's essential masterpiece (there's also a three hour version). We take three nights and enjoy the ups and downs of two Swedish children and their complex family. The first section is an unforgettable and fascinating family Christmas celebration that has never been equaled in any Holiday film!
"Remember The Night" (1940): Underrated Christmas romantic comedy starring the incomparable Barbara Stanwyck & Fred MacMurray. Extremely charming film that more people really need to see! Perfect film to watch (or cuddle up) with your spouse or partner. Watch the preview here
